- It is estimated that 17 million gallons of fuel are spilled annually while filling lawn mowers – more than was released by the Exxon Valdez (EPA)
- About one half of every metric ton of fertilizer applied never even makes it into plant tissue but ends up evaporating or being washed into local watercourses (Vitousek et al. 1997:13)
